How to

How to write out your goals every day and make it a habit

Write them first thing, before the day starts asking for things. Keep it short: what is today for? A few goals, not a to-do list. Then come back to them twice, once at midday and once at night.

The habit lives in the coming back. Writing goals down is easy on day one. What keeps it going is a fixed moment, a short list, and a count at night that is honest but never punishes you.

Step by step

On iPhone, Android or the web

  1. Open Daily Captain in the morning. Today’s sheet is the first screen.
  2. Write today’s goals. Up to seven; a new row appears as you fill one.
  3. If a goal belongs to one of your yearly goals, link it, so you see what the day is building toward.
  4. At midday, look once. Tick what is done, and ask whether what you are doing right now moves you toward the rest.
  5. In the evening, count the ticks and close the day. Write tomorrow’s first goal there; it is waiting on tomorrow’s sheet.
  6. After your first closed day, turn on the reminders: a quiet nudge in the morning, at midday and in the evening. Change the times in Settings.

Why it works

A goal written down in the morning is a question you answer all day: does this move me toward it? Being busy is not the same as getting closer.

Short beats complete. Seven goals is the ceiling, and most good days need fewer.

The night count closes the loop. You count what got done in plain numbers, with no red marks for what did not, and tomorrow starts with one goal already written.

Questions

Should I write my goals in the morning or the evening?

Both, in a way. Set tomorrow’s first goal at night, while today is fresh, and write the rest in the morning. Daily Captain carries that first goal over to the next sheet.

How many goals should I write each day?

Fewer than you think. Daily Captain stops at seven. Three that matter beat seven that only fill the page.

What if I miss a day?

Nothing happens. No red day, nothing to make up. Open the app and write today’s goals.

Paper or app?

Either works if you do it every day. Daily Captain started as a free paper sheet, the Daily Goal Sheet PDF. The app adds the midday check, the reminders and a buddy who sees your week.
