Daily Captain vs Paper planners

Checked 22 Sep 2026. Prices and features change; tell us if something is out of date: hello@dailycaptain.app.

The good paper planners all run the same day: a few priorities in the morning, a review at night, goals for the quarter above them. Full Focus calls it the Daily Big 3; Panda Planner has a morning review, three to five priorities and an end-of-day review; the BestSelf Self Journal has priorities, gratitude and a 13-week goal system. They cost $25 to $45 a planner, and a planner lasts about three months.

Daily Captain started as a paper sheet, the free Daily Goal Sheet PDF, and is the same method made dynamic: seven goals in the morning, one check at midday, an honest count and tomorrow’s first goal at night, with the year above it. It adds the three things paper cannot do: a reminder at each moment, the sheet on every device, and one person who sees your week. 8 free days, then $9.99 a month.

If you love paper for being offline, keep paper; the free PDF is yours either way. If your planners keep ending up half empty by week six, the difference is usually not the paper. It is that nobody saw it.

The same day, on the same page

If you have used a Full Focus, a Panda or a Self Journal, Daily Captain will feel familiar on the first screen: a short list of what today is for, a check in the middle, an honest look at night. That is not a coincidence. The method came from paper, and the free Daily Goal Sheet PDF is still at heegstra.io/goal-sheet if you want it printed.

What paper cannot do

A paper planner cannot remind you at midday. It cannot be in your pocket and on your laptop at the same time. And nobody sees it. Daily Captain does all three, and the third is the one that matters: you send your week to one person, they see it as you wrote it, and they answer. People keep a sheet that someone reads.

What paper does better

Paper is offline, and that is worth a lot. Writing by hand helps memory. A planner never crashes, never asks you to sign in, never sits next to a feed. If those are the reasons you use paper, Daily Captain is not going to change your mind, and it should not.

What people who leave Paper planners say, and what we did about it

We read the Amazon reviews and summaries for the Full Focus Planner, Panda Planner Classic and Pro and the BestSelf Self Journal, plus their Trustpilot profiles, on 22 Sep 2026. Amazon’s critical-review pages need a sign-in, so this is what the public pages and star breakdowns show, not a full critical sample. Three themes came up most.

The price adds up: $25 to $45 every quarter, a hundred to two hundred dollars a year, and it feels like a lot for paper.
What we did: Daily Captain is $9.99 a month, flat and visible, and it never runs out or needs reordering. It is comparable money; the difference is what you get for it. Paper needs no subscription to cancel, and we do.
It runs out after 90 days, and the second planner is where the habit dies.
What we did: Tomorrow’s sheet is always there, and tomorrow’s first goal is written tonight. The thing that keeps it going, though, is not the app. It is the person who sees your week.
Bindings that split, shipping that takes months, subscriptions hard to cancel, support hard to reach.
What we did: Nothing to ship, nothing to fall apart, and a person answers. Like paper, we have no calendar sync and no integrations, and like paper we send no guilt if you skip a day.

Questions

Is there a paper version of Daily Captain?

Yes. Daily Captain is based on the free Daily Goal Sheet PDF at heegstra.io/goal-sheet: one page, the same three moments. Print it and use it as long as you like.

Does Daily Captain look like a paper sheet?

It can. One of the five themes is a paper look, and the day is still one page: goals at the top, the midday check, the evening count at the bottom.

Is Daily Captain cheaper than a paper planner?

About the same. The planners above cost roughly $100 to $180 a year at list price; Daily Captain is $9.99 a month after 8 free days. The difference is reminders, sync and a person who sees your week.

Why does someone else see my week?

Because being seen works, the way people work harder in a library than alone at home. One person who knows what you set out to do is enough. They see exactly what you wrote, and only when you send it.

Why goals instead of to-dos?

Because being busy is not the same as getting closer. A to-do list holds everything you could do; a goal sheet holds the few things that move you toward what you want, and asks at night whether they happened.

Does Daily Captain have streaks?

No. No streaks, no red days, no guilt mechanics. You can untick anything, and a missed day is just a day.
