How to add daily quotes to your home screen
Add a quote widget. You install an app that picks a quote each day, then put its widget on your home screen, and the quote is there every time you pick up your phone.
Most quote widgets draw from a standard package: a library of famous lines, sorted into categories, the same for everyone. Daily Captain works differently. You follow people, and every day the widget shows a quote from the next person you follow. A different person, a new quote, every day.
Step by step
On iPhone (iOS 17 or later)
- Install Daily Captain from the App Store and sign in.
- Open the app once, so the widget has today’s quote and the next two weeks ready.
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen until the apps jiggle.
- Tap Edit in the top left corner, then Add Widget.
- Search for Daily Captain.
- Pick the small or the medium size, tap Add Widget, then Done.
On Android
- Install Daily Captain from Google Play and sign in.
- Open the app once, so the widget has today’s quote ready.
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen.
- Tap Widgets and search for Daily Captain.
- Touch and hold the widget, drag it where you want it and let go. Stretch it wider for longer quotes.
Why a quote from a person beats a quote from a pack
A standard quote pack gives everyone the same lines, picked by someone you never met. After a while you stop reading them.
In Daily Captain the quotes come from people. Members write their own, and you choose whose you get by following them: a friend, a coach, someone whose page you liked. The widget takes turns between them, so your home screen says something from a person you picked.
On a day when nobody you follow has a quote you have not seen yet, you get a line from our own library instead. Tap the widget and it opens your day, so the quote leads straight into what you want to get done.
What it needs
The widget is part of Daily Captain Premium, and it works during the free trial. Seven days free, then $49.99 a year or $9.99 a month.
It changes at midnight on its own. Open the app at least once every two weeks and it never runs out of quotes.
Questions
How often does the quote change?
Once a day, at midnight where you are. Each time you open Daily Captain it gets the next two weeks ready, so the widget changes even on days you do not open the app.
Can I add my own quotes?
Yes. Tap "submit a quote" on your day sheet. Once it is approved, it reaches the people who follow you, on their day and on their widget.
What if I do not follow anyone yet?
You get a quote from our own library every day. Follow someone with Connect on their page and their quotes come into the rotation. The library also fills in on any day when nobody you follow has a quote you have not seen yet.
Which size should I pick?
On iPhone, small or medium; medium gives a longer quote more room. On Android the widget starts at two by two and stretches to four by two.
