A recorded voice, or the people you follow
ThinkUp’s own strength is real: hearing an affirmation played back in your own recorded voice, picked from an expert-approved list or written yourself, is a genuinely different mechanic from a quote on a screen, and it is the one honest concession this whole set makes us take seriously. Daily Captain works differently again: a daily quote comes from the people you follow first, round robin, before anything from the shared list, attributed by first name and linked to that person’s page.
The moderation is human, not automatic: submit up to 3 quotes a day, the founder reads and approves each one, and an approved quote joins both the shared list and the rotation of everyone who follows you. ThinkUp’s version of "your own words" is spoken and recorded, not written and shared with people who follow you: there is no follow feature at all.
One price, more behind it
ThinkUp’s iOS price is $7.99 a month or $99.99 for life; the same product on Google Play is priced lower, at $2.99 a month or $24.99 for life, a real cross-platform gap in the same app. Theirs buys affirmations. For $9.99 a month after 7 free days, Daily Captain buys the morning sheet, the midday check, the honest evening count, yearly goals, three reminders a day, one buddy who sees your week, and the widget itself. There is no free tier and no shop, and the widget needs an active plan to keep turning over.
Fewer places to look, one thing to see
Free, ThinkUp gives a short version of the program: three recorded affirmations and one background track; paid tiers add more of both. Daily Captain has five themes and no fonts or backgrounds to pick, because the point of the widget is the person who wrote the quote, not the frame around it.
What people who leave ThinkUp say, and what we did about it
ThinkUp gets far fewer reviews than Motivation or I am: on 26 Sep 2026 we read all 11 of its App Store reviews (10 Jul 2024 to 23 Aug 2026, of which 4 were 1 to 3 stars) plus its 3 newest Google Play reviews, a pool of 7 critical texts in total. Treat this as indicative, not a solid statistical read. Three themes came up most.
- Support goes silent, especially around lost lifetime access after a login or device change.
- What we did: A person answers every message at Daily Captain, and there is no lifetime purchase to lose: it is a monthly charge you can stop any time.
- Recorded affirmations disappearing with no cloud backup.
- What we did: Daily Captain has nothing to record or lose the way a voice affirmation can: a sheet is a few lines of text, not an audio file.
- A library of scripted lines to record, instead of writing your own.
- What we did: ThinkUp already lets a user create and record their own affirmation, closer to Daily Captain’s own-words approach than the other apps in this set; the honest difference is that ThinkUp’s own words are spoken affirmations, and Daily Captain’s own words are written quotes, submitted up to 3 a day, approved by the founder by hand, and passed on to everyone who follows you.

Follow them from their page. Once one of their quotes is approved, it joins your rotation: it can be your daily quote and it can show in your widget, attributed to them by first name and linked back to their page.

Which phones does the widget work on?
