Daily Captain vs Habit Tracker by Inner Grow

Checked 22 Sep 2026. Prices and features change; tell us if something is out of date: hello@dailycaptain.app.

Habit Tracker by Inner Grow is a popular iPhone habit checklist: tap to complete, Apple Health auto-complete, widgets, group habits, reports and mood, with a free tier and very cheap upgrades, including a lifetime purchase under $10. It is Apple only: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Watch. We could not find a Google Play listing on 22 Sep 2026.

Daily Captain is not a habit tracker. It is a goal sheet: seven goals for today, one check, an honest count at night, and one person who sees your week. iPhone, Android and web. 8 free days, then $9.99 a month, which is far more than Habit Tracker’s lifetime price.

If you want to tick habits on an iPhone as cheaply as possible, Habit Tracker is hard to beat on price. If what you want is to know whether today moved you toward a goal, and to have someone see it, that is a different tool, and this is it.

A habit repeats. A goal gets reached.

Habit Tracker is for the things you do every day forever: water, steps, reading. It ticks them and counts the chain. Daily Captain is for the things you are trying to get to, written in your own words, judged at night by whether they happened. The two are not rivals so much as different questions. Plenty of people could use both.

Clarity in one second

The most common complaint about habit apps is the setup: many steps to create one habit, an onboarding you cannot skip, a pay screen before you have done anything. Daily Captain has no setup. You sign in and write today’s first goal. Every screen makes it obvious what to do, because there is only one thing to do on it.

A person sees it, on any phone

Habit Tracker’s sharing works between its users, on Apple devices. Daily Captain’s buddy can be on an iPhone, an Android phone or a laptop: you send a link, they see your week as you wrote it and answer. Being seen is the core loop, not a feature.

What people who leave Habit Tracker by Inner Grow say, and what we did about it

We read the 50 most recent critical App Store reviews of Habit Tracker by Inner Grow (February to September 2026) on 22 Sep 2026. Three themes came up most.

Bugs, especially in sharing a habit with a friend, and notifications or widgets that stop.
What we did: Our one social feature is the core of the product, not a bolt-on, and a person answers the same day if it fails. We are new and have no long record to cite.
A habit cap on the free tier, a paid nature that is not disclosed up front, and a price shown that differs from the price charged.
What we did: No caps and one price, shown on the page before you start. Shared plainly: there is no free version of Daily Captain at all, and Habit Tracker’s lifetime price is a fraction of one month of ours.
Many steps to set up one habit, then a pay screen.
What we did: No setup. Write today’s goals on the first screen; a minute a day.

When to choose Daily Captain

Questions

Is Daily Captain a habit tracker?

No. It is a daily goal sheet. You can write a habit on it, but it does not count chains or draw heatmaps.

Is Daily Captain on Android?

Yes: an Android app on Google Play, an iPhone app on the App Store, and the web version in any browser, all on the same account.

Is Daily Captain cheaper than Habit Tracker?

No. Habit Tracker’s lifetime purchase is under $10; Daily Captain is $9.99 a month after 8 free days.

Why goals instead of to-dos?

Because being busy is not the same as getting closer. A to-do list holds everything you could do; a goal sheet holds the few things that move you toward what you want, and asks at night whether they happened.

Why does someone else see my week?

Because being seen works, the way people work harder in a library than alone at home. One person who knows what you set out to do is enough. They see exactly what you wrote, and only when you send it.

Does Daily Captain have streaks?

No. No streaks, no red days, no guilt mechanics. You can untick anything, and a missed day is just a day.
